Absorption & Bioavailability
Carnosine vs Picolinate is one of the most commonly compared pairs of Zinc forms. The research on each is summarized below.
Carnosine is classified as Secondary Form in the FormulaForge formulary. Picolinate is classified as Preferred Form.
A chelate of zinc and L-carnosine. In a single small 2007 crossover trial in 10 healthy volunteers (PMID 16777920), no significant rise in gut permeability was seen when it was taken alongside the NSAID indomethacin, which otherwise raised permeability; the human trial did not test zinc or carnosine alone or compare it with other zinc forms, and the gastric findings were in rats. This 5-day study in healthy volunteers is not evidence about gut health in people who take NSAIDs regularly — consult your physician about NSAID use. This is a single small study, and we believe it needs further study and verification.
