Ubiquinol vs Ubiquinone CoQ10: Which Form Absorbs Better?
Head-to-head trials disagree on whether ubiquinol out-absorbs ubiquinone. In the largest crossover in older adults the difference was not statistically significant.

Our Recommendation
Formulation, not form
In a randomized crossover in healthy adults aged 65–74, ubiquinol's absorption advantage over ubiquinone was 1.7-fold but NOT statistically significant (95% CI 0.9–3.1, p=0.129; PMID 32188111). A separate double-blind crossover in 14 young healthy adults comparing seven CoQ10 products found the two best-absorbed contained ubiquinone and ubiquinol respectively, and concluded bioavailability depends on carrier lipids and solubilization rather than on which redox form is used (PMID 30153575) — though that study's population was young adults, so it does not by itself settle an age-specific question. Talk to your physician about which CoQ10 fits your situation.
Ubiquinol (Reduced CoQ10) vs Ubiquinone (Oxidized CoQ10)
Ubiquinol (Reduced CoQ10)
Pros
- +The reduced, already-active form of CoQ10 as supplied in the capsule
- +Reached significantly higher plasma CoQ10 than ubiquinone at 200 mg/day in a 12-subject, non-randomized fixed-order study (PMID 27128225)
Cons
- -Higher cost than ubiquinone
- -Less chemically stable than ubiquinone — requires appropriate encapsulation
- -Contradicting evidence: in a randomized crossover in adults aged 65–74 (n=21), the advantage over ubiquinone was not statistically significant (p=0.129; PMID 32188111)
Best For
Adults comparing CoQ10 forms who want the reduced form in the capsule and accept a higher cost while the head-to-head evidence remains mixed.
Absorbed CoQ10 appears in plasma largely as ubiquinol regardless of which form is ingested (PMID 32188111).
Ubiquinone (Oxidized CoQ10)
Pros
- +Lower cost per milligram
- +More chemically stable than ubiquinol
- +The form used in most of the long-running CoQ10 supplementation literature
Cons
- -Must be reduced to ubiquinol in the body before it can act
- -Produced a smaller plasma CoQ10 rise than ubiquinol in a 12-subject, non-randomized fixed-order study (PMID 27128225)
Best For
Adults who want a lower-cost, chemically stable CoQ10 with the longest clinical research track record.
Requires reduction to ubiquinol in the body; absorbed CoQ10 nonetheless appears in plasma largely as ubiquinol (PMID 32188111).
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does ubiquinol become the better choice as you get older?
- The evidence does not establish that. What is documented is that the body's own CoQ10 biosynthesis declines with age — a separate phenomenon from how well either form is absorbed. The one randomized crossover run specifically in older adults (n=21, aged 65–74) found ubiquinol's absorption advantage over ubiquinone was not statistically significant (1.7-fold, 95% CI 0.9–3.1, p=0.129; PMID 32188111). No published trial we could find shows that absorption of ubiquinone specifically worsens with age. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Talk to your physician about which form fits your situation.
- Is ubiquinol the same as CoQ10?
- Ubiquinol is the reduced form of CoQ10 and ubiquinone is the oxidized form. Both are CoQ10 — the difference is which redox state the capsule supplies.
- Does the body convert between the two forms?
- Yes, in both directions. In a randomized crossover in healthy older adults, absorbed CoQ10 appeared in plasma mostly as ubiquinol even when it was consumed as ubiquinone, and no difference in the redox status of the absorbed CoQ10 was observed between formulations (PMID 32188111). Talk to your physician before starting any supplement.
- Which form does FormulaForge use?
- Ubiquinone. If you bring us a formula that specifies ubiquinol, we substitute ubiquinone at a higher equivalent dose — not because ubiquinol is the lesser form, but because we cannot currently manufacture with it. Ubiquinol is oxygen- and heat-sensitive and is not available to us in a capsule-compatible material, so it is not something we can put in your formula today. We would rather tell you that plainly than imply the substitution is an upgrade. The head-to-head absorption evidence between the two forms is mixed in any case, and the largest randomized crossover in older adults found no statistically significant difference (PMID 32188111).
