Best Saffron Form: Which One Is Worth It?
Saffron's mood- and sleep-supporting properties appear to depend on consistent delivery of its active constituents — crocins and safranal. Studies use standardized extracts at defined doses; raw threads cannot reliably replicate these levels.

Saffron Extract (.3% Safranal) — Saffron Extract (.3% Safranal) is one form of this compound. Limited direct human-PK evidence for this specific form. We grade forms only where form-specific human pharmacokinetic evidence exists; this form does not yet meet that bar, so we do not assign it a benefit rating.

Editorial note
A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 202 adults found 28 mg/day of affron® for 12 weeks was associated with greater improvements in mood scores versus placebo (PMID 40414301). A separate 28-day randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 63 adults with poor sleep found affron® at 28 mg/day was associated with improved sleep quality ratings, Insomnia Severity Index scores, and restorative sleep scores versus placebo (PMID 32056539). Raw saffron threads and non-standardized extracts have highly variable crocin and safranal content, making therapeutic dosing uncertain.
All Forms Compared
Standardized Extract (affron®, ≥3.5% lepticrosalide)
Mood support, sleep quality, stress management
The form used in the largest published affron® randomized trial (n=202, 12 weeks; PMID 40414301) and a dedicated randomized sleep trial (n=63; PMID 32056539). Standardized to ≥3.5% lepticrosalide (composite of crocins and safranal). Dose: 28 mg/day.
Other Standardized Extracts (stated crocin/safranal %)
Mood and relaxation support when affron® unavailable
Extracts standardized to a declared crocin or safranal percentage offer more predictable potency than raw threads, but most randomized-trial evidence specifically uses affron® or Satiereal® brands.
Raw Saffron Threads
Culinary use only
Crocin, safranal, and picrocrocin content in saffron threads varies widely by origin, harvest, and storage. No published randomized trial has verified therapeutic efficacy of threads at culinary doses.
Non-Standardized Saffron Powder/Capsule
Not recommended for supplement purposes
Without declared standardization, there is no assurance that active constituent levels match those used in clinical trials.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is affron® and why does standardization matter for saffron?
- affron® is a branded saffron stigma extract standardized to ≥3.5% lepticrosalide — a measure of crocins and safranal, the principal active constituents. Standardization matters because saffron threads vary considerably in active-compound content depending on origin and storage. Randomized trials reporting mood and sleep support used 28 mg/day of affron®; replicating these results requires a product that delivers a verified quantity of these constituents.
- What does the research say about saffron and sleep?
- A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial in 63 adults with self-reported poor sleep found that 28 mg/day of a standardized saffron extract (affron®) for 28 days was associated with significant improvements in Insomnia Severity Index scores, sleep quality ratings, and restorative sleep scores compared to placebo (PMID 32056539). A follow-up randomized double-blind multi-dose trial in 120 adults also found saffron was associated with improved sleep quality and increased evening melatonin concentrations compared to placebo (PMID 34438361). These findings support saffron's potential to support restful sleep, though further research with objective sleep measures is needed.
- How much saffron should I take for mood support?
- Published randomized trials on mood support consistently use 28 mg/day of a standardized affron® extract. A randomized double-blind trial in 128 adults found significant mood improvements at 28 mg/day but not at 22 mg/day (PMID 28735826), suggesting dose matters. This is not a therapeutic dose for diagnosed mood disorders; consult a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
- Is saffron extract safe to take daily?
- Across published randomized trials using affron® at 28 mg/day for up to 12 weeks, no serious adverse events were reported. A randomized trial in 202 adults found saffron was well tolerated over 3 months (PMID 40414301). As with any supplement, consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting, especially if you are taking medications or managing an existing health condition.
