Interaction & safety note
5-HTP is a direct serotonin precursor and can interact with prescription medications that affect serotonin. Do not combine 5-HTP with antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs) or other serotonergic drugs. Talk to your physician before use, especially if you take any prescription medication.

- A 2020 pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modeling study in healthy volunteers found that oral 5-HTP, a direct serotonin precursor, produced a measurable, dose-related physiological response, and the researchers built a model showing a saliva marker reliably predicted the blood-level response. - A 2008 crossover trial in healthy male volunteers found that oral 5-HTP combined with carbidopa produced dose-dependent physiological responses, confirming that 5-HTP is absorbed and activates serotonergic pathways, though nausea occurred more frequently at higher doses. PubMed
